Research shows that every year, up to one in five people will suffer from neck pain. In about half of the cases, the neck pain will subside, but for approximately half of the sufferers, the pain will either become chronic or recur regularly over the course of their life.
Is there no hope then when you suffer neck pain?
Causes
Neck pain occurs for many different reasons, such as direct trauma – for example whiplash -, long hours spent at a desk, faulty posture, and repetitive strain. These problems often affect the joints, muscles, and ligaments in the spine, and can even irritate the nerves that run down to the arms and/or legs. Problems lower down in the spine, feet, or legs in return can also affect the upper back and neck.
To find the exact cause of your pain, your chiropractor will look at your whole body, from the feet up, and assess how you stand and move. (S)he will also examine your nervous sytem, to ensure that it is working well, without any interference. Each verteba in your spine will be examined for it’s individual movement, and faulty movement patterns will be detected.
University trained
Chiropractors are trained to deal with mechanical problems of the spine and other joints and soft tissues and can generally help relieve neck pain. Your Chiropractor will also be able to advice you on exercises or lifestyle adjustments that could aid recovery and help prevent future occurrences.
Tailor made treatment plan
Chiropractic treatment often involves an adjustment to the affected joint(s), in combination with other techniques, such as mobilisation, stretching, massage, trigger point technique, dry needling, and taping. These adjustments aim to restore normal movement within the joints, and relieve tension in the surrounding muscles.
Not just pain relief…
Chiropractic is however not just about pain relief. After patients get the relief they want, many choose to continue with some type of periodic care. These chiropractic check-ups can assist the final stages of healing and help detect and prevent new problems before they become serious.
Results
Responses to chiropractic treatment can vary depending on many factors, such as the length of time you have had the problem, what the problem is, your daily activities, the amount of rest you get, whether you are in good health, whether you exercise to keep fit and strong, and of course how well you follow the recommendations of your chiropractor.
